Professor Dan Edelstein

Dan Edelstein is a professor of French and (by courtesy) History at Stanford University, the W. Warren Shelden University Fellow in Undergraduate Education, and the Faculty Director of the Stanford Summer Humanities Institute. He is the author of two books (both with the University of Chicago Press), one on the French Revolution, the other on the Enlightenment. He is currently working on a history of revolutionary authority.

At Stanford, he mostly teaches courses on French literature, early modern political theory, and intellectual history. He particularly enjoys teaching freshmen. In 2006, he received the Walter J. Gores Award for Excellence in Teaching, the university’s highest teaching honor; and in 2011, the Dean’s Distinguished Teaching Award.
